Chapter 6 life proces. Science class 10
Respiration
The proceess by which organisms obtain energy by utilising food in the cells is called respiration.
•In this process Of respiration, food reacts with oxygen to release energy. Carbon dioxide and water are also produced during the process.
• The energy released during the process is stored in the form of ATP( adenosine triphosphate)
The intake of molecular oxygen and elimination of carbon dioxide produced are also parts of respiration.
Thus respiration may be defined as the process which involves:
• Intake of molecular oxygen by breathing,
• use of molecular oxygen in cells for Oxidation of glucose,
• production of carbon dioxide, water and energy,
• storing energy in the form of ATP and
• elimination of carbon dioxide and water by breathing.
Breathing and Respiration
The mechanism by which organisms inhale oxygen from the environment and exhale carbon dioxide into the environment is termed as breathing.
Diff. b/w breathing & Respiration
Breathing
• It is a physical process.
• It does not release any energy.
• It is an extra cellular process.
• It does not involve enzyme Action
• It is confined to certain organs only.
• Breathing mechanism differs in different animals.
Respiration
• It is both a physical and biochemical process involving exchange of gases and Oxidation of food.
• It release energy which is stored in the form of ATP.
• It is both an extra cellular and intracellular process.
• A number of enzymes are involved in Oxidation of food.
• It occurs in all cells of body.
• Respiratory mechanism is similar in all animals.
Types of Respiration
Oxidation of food may take place in presence or absence of oxygen. Respiration is two types:
1. Aerobic respiration
2. Anaerobic respiration
1. Aerobic respiration
The type of Respiration which takes place in the presence of oxygen is called aerobic respiration. It takes place in most of organisms. The organisms which respire aerobically are called aerobes.
In this type of Respiration, food is completely oxidised to carbon dioxide and water and a large amount of energy is released
2. Anaerobic respiration
The type of Respiration which takes place in absence of oxygen is called anaerobic respiration. The organisms which respire anaerobically are called anaerobes, e.g. certain fungi and bacteria
Mechanism of Respiration
The process of Respiration starts with glucose. The initial step of Respiration called glycolysis
Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm of cell.
